CCL Africa Undaunted By the Pandemic
Despite the uncertainty the pandemic has brought, CCL volunteers across Africa in 2020 continued to take bold steps forward in their climate advocacy in 2020: lobbying their governments to join an international carbon pricing group, organizing “shoe strikes,” launching new chapters, and more.
David Michael Terungwa is our coordinator for Africa. When he first joined us in 2015, Mike fell in love with Citizens' Climate Lobby’s focus on helping its volunteers build respectful relationships with their policy makers. His dedication to CCL remains as strong as ever, and this recent string of victories has left him and the rest of CCL Africa refreshed, recharged, and inspired to keep moving forward.

Canada Triumphs in 2020
CCL Canada has been building political will for carbon pricing since September 2010. In June 2018, the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act achieved Royal Assent in the Canadian Parliament. Volunteers at Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada were pleased with the plan in 2018. They saw it as a great start and continued to lobby for improvements.
In December 2020, the government Canada announced key changes to its carbon pricing policy. What Citizens’ Climate Lobby advocated for and what the government plans to enact overlapped significantly.
Canada’s carbon pricing policy is the most comprehensive climate income (carbon fee and dividend) policy on the planet. It is also often referred to as the “Canadian Carbon pricing policy” international carbon pricing circles.

The Principles for Reinventing Prosperity
The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly, and radically, altered the everyday assumptions of people around the world. We have seen shocking loss of life and unprecedented direct and indirect costs (one estimate projects potential GDP losses of $82.4 trillion over 5 years.)
Decision-making at the human scale can have global consequences, and people’s willingness (and ability) to act with knowledge and insight can determine the fate of millions. We may be entering a new phase of geopolitics, in which people in community are the new superpower.
To achieve shared, adaptive resilience, we need to recognize and act on these six Principles for Reinventing Prosperity:
