Upgrading Global Climate Action in 2021

The stage is being set for a global upgrade of climate action in 2021. Geopolitics and trade, food and finance, and sustainable development will be redefined, for the better, by a new age of climate cooperation. Citizens’ Climate International is conducting a series of workshops that have included enhanced volunteer training and empowerment and the production of regionally relevant, locally rooted, structured actions for 2021 by our climate leaders across the planet. Our first two workshops were on December 16, 2020 and January 27, 2021.

Largest Climate Survey: Majority Want Action Now

On the same day as our international Zoom workshop on January 27, 2021, Oxford University and the UNDP released the results of the largest survey ever on climate change. The People’s Climate Vote included 1.22 million people over 14 years of age from 50 countries and 17 languages. The data was collected between October and December 2020 and, despite the coronavirus pandemic, 59% of the people saying there is a climate emergency also said the world should “do everything necessary and urgently” in response.

Introducing CCL Japan and India

The pandemic has opened up unique opportunities for civic engagement and driven thousands of people to act on pressing societal issues in ways they never have before. This is especially true for India and Japan, where CCL volunteers have built up a critical mass to inspire action on climate.

Hear from Kohei Noda, our Japan National Coordinator, and Rituraj Phukan, our India National Coordinator, about the wave of grassroots climate activity in their countries.

CCL Africa Undaunted By the Pandemic

Despite the uncertainty the pandemic has brought, CCL volunteers across Africa in 2020 continued to take bold steps forward in their climate advocacy in 2020: lobbying their governments to join an international carbon pricing group, organizing “shoe strikes,” launching new chapters, and more.

David Michael Terungwa is our coordinator for Africa. When he first joined us in 2015, Mike fell in love with Citizens' Climate Lobby’s focus on helping its volunteers build respectful relationships with their policy makers. His dedication to CCL remains as strong as ever, and this recent string of victories has left him and the rest of CCL Africa refreshed, recharged, and inspired to keep moving forward.

CCL Germany By the Numbers in 2020

2020 was a productive year for CCL Germany. Here are some of their numbers:

  • Added 34 climate lobbyists and now have 103 in Germany
  • 47 meetings - most of them online - with members of the German parliament
  • 9 meetings with German members of the European Parliament
  • 4 meetings with members of state parliaments and 7 with people from other societal groups and communicators

They were able to reach more than 400 participants via different meetings, presentations and events they organized and/or were involved with, most of which happened online. They documented 6 letters to the editor. Currently, they have 10 working groups to tackle different topics.

Canada Triumphs in 2020

CCL Canada has been building political will for carbon pricing since September 2010. In June 2018, the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act achieved Royal Assent in the Canadian Parliament. Volunteers at Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada were pleased with the plan in 2018. They saw it as a great start and continued to lobby for improvements.

In December 2020, the government Canada announced key changes to its carbon pricing policy. What Citizens’ Climate Lobby advocated for and what the government plans to enact overlapped significantly.

Canada’s carbon pricing policy is the most comprehensive climate income (carbon fee and dividend) policy on the planet. It is also often referred to as the “Canadian Carbon pricing policy” international carbon pricing circles.

The Principles for Reinventing Prosperity

The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly, and radically, altered the everyday assumptions of people around the world. We have seen shocking loss of life and unprecedented direct and indirect costs (one estimate projects potential GDP losses of $82.4 trillion over 5 years.)

Decision-making at the human scale can have global consequences, and people’s willingness (and ability) to act with knowledge and insight can determine the fate of millions. We may be entering a new phase of geopolitics, in which people in community are the new superpower.

To achieve shared, adaptive resilience, we need to recognize and act on these six Principles for Reinventing Prosperity:
